Godhead

The Godhead is comprised of God the Father, His Son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost.  Mormons believe these three to be distinctly separate people who share a common purpose.  Jesus Christ plays an integral role in the Godhead.

As a member of the Godhead, Jesus has certain roles and responsibilities.  Jesus is the redeemer of the world.  Mormonism says that because of His sacrifice on the cross, we can live with our Heavenly Father again.  Mormons believe that Jesus Christ helped Heavenly Father create the world.  He accomplished this under Heavenly Father’s direction.  Because of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice, we are able to repent for our sins and be forgiven for anything we do wrong.  When we are facing great trials in life, we can take comfort in knowing that Jesus Christ has endured great pain and can empathize with us.  He is the only perfect man to ever walk the earth.  Just like us, He has a body of flesh and bone.  Mormons believe that every person born on the earth has the light of Christ within them.  To have the light of Christ means that people are born good and everyone is born with the capacity to love.  Christ is our brother, as well.  He comforts us and has sacrificed His life so we might return to live with Him again.

God and the Holy Ghost have distinct duties within the Godhead as well.  God acts as our Father in Heaven who watches out for us and answers our prayers.  He assumes all of the responsibilities that a father would.  Eventually, when our bodies die and we return to Him, He will judge us.  He has a physical body.  The Holy Ghost does not have a physical body.  He is a spirit.  He helps us make wise decisions, comforts us, and testifies of God and Jesus Christ.  According to Mormon belief, only those who are baptized can receive constant companionship from the Holy Ghost.

Each member of the Godhead has separate and distinct roles in bringing to pass God’s eternal plan of happiness.  Although they have separate duties, they come together in a common goal.  All three work to bring about the “immortality and eternal life of man.”  They all want to see God’s children make wise decisions so we may live with Him again.  They all strive to see man come unto Christ.  Through Jesus Christ, we are able to repent, be saved, and dwell with Him forever.  Without Jesus Christ, the Godhead would not be as effective nor would it be complete.  His role is unique in bringing God’s plan to pass.
