Jesus Sacrifice

Mormons believe that no one has ever or will ever make a greater sacrifice than Jesus Christ.  When he died on the cross, he took upon Himself the sins of the world so we would not have to bear them alone.  His sacrifice allows us the opportunity to accept Him and dwell in the Kingdom of God forever.  His sacrifice showed an immense amount of love for us.  In John 1:17, we read that Jesus was the “Lamb of God” who was sent to save us and help us return to our Heavenly Father.

Jesus Christ died for our sins.Jesus sacrificed for mankind during His earthly ministry as well.  He spent most of His time teaching and serving others.  He led His life according to God’s will, not His own will.  He spent a lot of time praying for the Lord to guide and direct Him, like the night before he gave the Sermon on the Mount.  His life was centered around people.  He visited and dined with different types of people, even those who were outcasts.  He did not discriminate and could see the beauty in everyone.  Jesus never sought after wealth, riches, or fame.  He was not interested in pursuing cheap thrills.  In Luke 10:38-42, Jesus counsels us to not be concerned with material possessions.  He lived a humble life because he knew that material possessions would not give him satisfaction or fulfillment.  He led in kindness, free from ego.  He was very much in tune with what would bring true happiness in life.  He found fulfillment in serving others and sharing the gospel.  The New Testament is filled with accounts of Jesus Christ giving blessings and healing the sick.   His entire earthly ministry was spent sacrificing for others.  Through Jesus Christ we learn that happiness can come from sacrificing for others and for God.

His ultimate sacrifice was giving His life on the cross.  He atoned for the sins of the world.  And he never complained or murmured despite the fact that he was a perfect man and His trial was illegal on many counts.  Imagine the pain he suffered as he died for us on Calvary Hill.  Jesus Christ must have a perfect love for each one of us to be able to endure such pain for us.

As members of the Mormon Church, we strive to follow His example each day.  He demonstrated a perfect faith in Heavenly Father.  He did everything that was asked of Him, even if it required pain and agony.  There are times when it seems we are asked to sacrifice a lot.  As Mormons, we are asked to attend weekly church meetings, pay tithing, and spend time serving others.  Sometimes, it can feel like the Lord asks too much.  But if we follow Christ’s example, we realize that our sacrifices are nothing compared to what Christ had to endure.  The Book of Mormon testifies that the atonement is the greatest gift that anyone could ever give us.  Because of His sacrifice, we can live forever with God.
